Artist Statement: The Other Side of Seeing

Electromagnetic energy spreads from mile-long radio waves to frantic little gamma rays. The visible light that we notice is just a little blip somewhere near the middle of that vast rainbow.

If we lived at the pace of rocks, we’d see the slow swings of eons, mountains rising and stars jostling for North Star position. If we lived at the level of diatoms we’d struggle with Brownian motion as individual water molecules danced and shoved.

I'm neither rock nor diatom but sometimes I see where the edges are, the places where if things were slightly different, everything would shine newly wondrous.

What you can see is always more than what you do see. I hope to show you what's on the other side of seeing.

Welcome!

Thanks for visiting. Collected here is my more recent work, born in conversation with the natural environment which surrounds my home.

I have about 20 paintings on display at Pablito's Taqueria in Friday Harbor, WA, and a few more at Demeter's Bakery. From June 1 - 26, Pamela Mills and I will have a show, "Sight, Mind, and Paint: Conversations with Rock, Tree, and Sky" at Orcas Center in Eastsound, WA.

Most of the frames are simple varnished boards, showing about 1/4" around the image and having a depth of about 1 1/2".

As I create new paintings, I'll be posting more images. Check back every few weeks to see what's new! Thanks.
